Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier
 
Born in Detmold, Germany in 1956, Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier obtained a law degree in 1986 and embarked upon a career in politics in the Federal Republic of Germany. After serving as Head of the Office of the Minister-President of Land Lower Saxony from 1993 to 1994, he took charge of the department in the Lower Saxon State Chancellery responsible for policy guidelines and interministerial coordination and planning, where he remained until 1996. From 1996 to 1998 he held the position of State Secretary and Head of the State Chancellery of Lower Saxony, becoming State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery and Commissioner for the Federal Intelligence Services in 1998. In 1999 he became the Head of the Federal Chancellery, a position he held for the next six years. Dr Steinmeier has been Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs since November 2005 and, since November 2007, Deputy Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
